How to Install Grasscloth Wallpaper.

Updated: Sep 22, 2023

Installing grasscloth wallpaper can be a bit more challenging compared to regular wallpaper due to its natural fibers. Here's a detailed step-by-step guide to help you through the process:

**Materials you'll need:**

1. Grasscloth wallpaper rolls (make sure you have enough to cover your wall)

2. Wallpaper adhesive (heavy-duty clear adhesive recommended for grasscloth)

3. Plastic drop cloth or tarp

4. Wallpaper smoothing brush or plastic smoother

5. Sponge

6. Utility knife or wallpaper scissors

7. Measuring tape

8. Level

9. Pencil

10. Wallpaper primer (optional, but recommended for better adhesion)

11. Wallpaper tray (for holding adhesive)

12. Ladder or step stool (if needed)

**Preparation:**

1. Measure the wall: Measure the height and width of the wall you want to cover with grasscloth wallpaper. Add a few extra inches to the measurements to allow for trimming.

2. Prep the wall: Make sure the wall surface is clean, smooth, and free of any dust or debris. If the wall has existing wallpaper, remove it and ensure the surface is clean and dry. If the wall is painted, consider applying a wallpaper primer for better adhesion.

**Installation:**

1. Cut the grasscloth: Unroll the grasscloth wallpaper and cut it to the appropriate length for your wall, allowing a few extra inches at the top and bottom to trim later.

2. Apply adhesive: Fill a wallpaper tray with the recommended wallpaper adhesive. Use a paint roller or brush to apply the adhesive evenly on the backside of the grasscloth. Be sure to cover the entire surface but avoid soaking the material.

3. Book the wallpaper: "Booking" is a term used to describe the process of folding the wallpaper onto itself with the adhesive side in. This allows the adhesive to activate without drying out. Fold the pasted sides of the wallpaper together, making sure not to crease it, and let it sit for the time specified by the adhesive manufacturer (usually around 5-10 minutes).

4. Start hanging the grasscloth: Unfold the top portion of the grasscloth and position it at the top of the wall. Use a level to ensure it's straight, and lightly mark the top edge with a pencil. Use a ladder or step stool if needed to reach higher areas.

5. Smooth and press: Gently press the grasscloth against the wall, starting from the center and working your way outwards to remove any air bubbles or wrinkles. Use a wallpaper smoothing brush or a plastic smoother for this task.

6. Trim the edges: Once the top portion is securely in place, use a utility knife or wallpaper scissors to trim the excess grasscloth at the top and bottom edges of the wall. Be precise in your cutting for clean lines.

7. Repeat the process: Move on to the next strip of grasscloth, applying adhesive, booking, and hanging it next to the previous strip, making sure the edges align correctly. Take your time to match patterns if your grasscloth has a pattern.

8. Overlap and match seams: When hanging subsequent strips, overlap the edges slightly (usually about 1/4 inch or as recommended by the manufacturer) to create a seamless look. Be careful to match the pattern and maintain a straight line.

9. Clean up excess adhesive: As you work, use a damp sponge to clean up any excess adhesive that may have squeezed out from between the seams.

10. Continue until the wall is covered: Repeat the process of hanging, smoothing, and trimming until the entire wall is covered with grasscloth.

**Finishing touches:**

1. Once you've covered the entire wall, go over the grasscloth with the smoothing brush or plastic smoother again to ensure it is securely adhered.

2. Let it dry: Allow the grasscloth wallpaper to dry completely. Drying times will depend on the type of adhesive used and environmental conditions.

**Tips:**

- Take care not to get the grasscloth too wet, as excessive moisture can damage the natural fibers.

- If you need to remove and reposition a strip, be gentle, as the grasscloth can be delicate.

- Match the patterns carefully, especially if your grasscloth has a distinct design.

- It's essential to follow the manufacturer's instructions for the specific grasscloth and adhesive you are using.

Remember that grasscloth wallpaper is best installed by experienced professionals due to its delicate nature. If you're not confident in your wallpapering skills, consider hiring a professional installer to ensure the best results.
